With the large amount of wind farms to be built in the next years, multiple wind farms will appear in the most favourable locations. The planning and design of these clusters pose new challenges with regards to the sitting of the connected wind farms. In particular wake effects induced by wind shadowing between farms has to be minimized. High Resolution radar can be used to characterize the shape of the wake phenomena downstream of existing wind farms and thus serve as reference to validate modelling approaches of the far-field of wakes. EERA Design Tools for Offshore Wind Farm Clust, a FP7 collaborative project (FP7-ENERGY-2011-1) is dedicated to the offshore wake modelling for wind farm cluster where SAR data will be used.

Below are plotted 2 transects in the intensity image to illustrate the wake phenomena downstream Horns Rev 1 and 2 wind farms off the Danish coast. Transects are represenetd in white on the SAR image. Clear minimum can be observed behing each farm. The length of the wake observed behind Horns Rev 1 in this image is at least 65 km.
